By Accident, On Purpose: Six Weeks as a Surrealist

A hundred years ago a group of artists looked at a world that had stopped making sense and decided the reasonable response was to stop making sense back. They played games. They made art by accident on purpose. They believed the strange interior life was not a distraction from reality but a fuller part of it, and they built methods to get at it.

This is six weeks of doing what they did. Paint, print, build, write, dream, draw, collaborate, and find out what turns up.

We also build the skill of talking about it. Critique is not just how a room discusses art. It is how you find out where your intention actually landed, and then decide whether you want to close that gap or leave it open. That does not stay in the studio. It is what makes a hard conversation survivable, a piece of feedback usable, a disagreement something other than a threat. Almost nobody is taught it directly, and it is nowhere near as brutal as it sounds.

There is no way to be bad at this, which is a description of the methods rather than encouragement. Come as an artist or come as someone who has not made anything since school.

This is a class about art. It is also about paying attention to yourself, letting your nervous system settle into making something, and practicing a thing worth having right now: the ability to see the world, and yourself, differently on purpose.
