Battle of the Classic Eras mural by Castulo “Kuaze” Perez and Phillip Seth, located on the north and east walls at Valpo Creates Center in Valparaiso, is a striking visual dialogue between two time periods.

On one side, Perez (Kuaze) renders a bold, hyper-stylized figure, evoking a modern or perhaps more futuristic sensibility, while on the opposite wall, Seth paints a more classical, Renaissance-inspired bust — but with a contemporary twist. Playfully, the classical era “David bust” wearing retro headphones combines two unique classic eras. The juxtaposition of these pieces feels like a playful yet thoughtful battle: the old world meets the new, tradition grapples with innovation, and the past is reimagined through today’s cultural lens.

Through vibrant colors and dynamic forms, the mural brings energy and conversation to the building’s exterior. It not only highlights the distinct artistic styles of both creators, but also mirrors the mission of the Valpo Creates Center itself: a space where creative innovation and historical roots unite. In this way, the mural becomes more than just decoration—it’s a metaphor for creative evolution, community identity, and the ongoing dialogue between eras.

“I love the variety of murals around all of Valparaiso, the range of subject matter and artistic styles are evidence of our own community’s diversity; the programs and contributions of the VCC are proof of our economic and cultural vitality. What makes this particular mural special is that it incorporates the VCC color palette as a celebration of our physical space and center for us to gather in artistic exploration.”

Kuaze grew up in the 80s and 90s, which helped influence his graffiti writing. He paints graffiti because no other art form compares to the freedom, the spirit, or flow of the moment.

Kuaze grew up in East Chicago, IN and had the fortune of seeing artists that competed hand in hand with the biggest cities including Chicago such as Rooster and Oms from the Hitmen crew, Ish and Traz of TuffBoys, Slash and Betski of GForce.

After graduating from EC Central, Kuaze attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago studying Graphic Design. He met a handful of talented graffiti writers that had incredible influences on his style. Graffiti opened the door to an art career that he’s enjoyed for over 25 years.
